Eye Cancer

The eye is a very delicate and unique organ and its care and function is

particularly affected when a disease as severe as a cancer affects it. Rarely, eye can develop a cancerous tumor within, like a retinal tumor or retinoblastoma in young children which is painless and slowly involves the vision and entire eye. Sometimes, the eye gets affected by other tumors near the eye or its nerve, like brain tumor, paranasal sinus malignancies, orbitaltumors. In such situations, special care needs to be taken to tackle the disease and preserve the eye and vision. The eye may get damaged by the disease itself or its treatment. Hence, vigilant care of the eyes and special eye preservation techniques need to be used. Spectra Eye Care, excels in such management and often involves multidisciplinary specialists to give the most effective treatments.

Low Vision

All eye diseases cannot be treated completely to restore full vision.

There are certain eye conditions, where the vision loss is permanent and not treatable. These include disorders of the retina(example Retinitis pigmentosa, retinal dystrophy) or optic nerve diseases (optic atrophy) or visual pathway disorders(brain tumor, stroke, post infectious sequelae). No amount of surgical or medical intervention can cure the underlying disease in such cases.
These patients comprise of a significant number of “Low vision” or “Partially sighted patients” . Although they are “blind “as per definition almost 75 % of the so-called blind, are actually partially sighted, who can greatly benefit by low vision rehabilitative service. As per survey, up to 3/4th of the students enrolled in Indian blind schools don’t need Braille training and can deal with their academic and vocational training with good visual rehabilitation.

Visual Rehabilitation involves utilization of the residual vision for activities of daily living and vocation. The patient is first evaluated by ‘functional visual assessment’ to know the existing vision and the handicap arising from the same. Then the patient is given a trial using optical devices, non-optical devices and environmental modification. The devices are customized as per patients’ vision requirements like distance vision or near vision, working versus reading.
A range of computer based devices and programmes are also available to make computer and internet available to low vision patients. Once the patient and vision therapist are sure of which devices are best suited, the device has to be dispensed to the patient. This may then need 1 to 4 training sessions as per need, so that the patient is effectively able to use the device independently and gain the visual benefit desired.

Vision Therapy involves training the residual healthy part of the retina and visual pathway for improving its function in order to achieve a desirable target vision. This is based on the principle of ‘neuroplasticity’, where in the brain cells(neurons) can be re trained to perform certain tasks after the damage has occurred.
In case of low vision where the ‘good’ part of visual system is lost to disease, the ‘weaker peripheral’ part can be strengthened to achieve a desirable target vision. It involves office based sessions as well as home based techniques. This therapy can also be could be computer assisted. This modality can also be utilized in ‘normally sighted’ individuals and is commonly used in sports and army personnel to enhance reflexes and acuity of vision.

Tear Duct disorders

The tear duct or the nasolacrimal duct drains excess tears from eye into the nose

and is responsible for maintaining the hygiene of the eye. A blockage in this can lead to nasolacrimal duct obstruction, which leads to stasis of tears in the eye. This, in turn, can cause watery eyes (epiphora) and infection of the tear sac(dacryocystitis). Management of this involves medication or (more often) a day-care surgery to open the blockage. Sometimes, this condition can occur in new borns when the passages are under developed, and these cases can be treated with local massage.
